If you’re anything like me, when you are stuck home alone all you want to do is relax and do as little as possible. However, I had been doing that for about 4 days when I finally grew sick of it. So here is my solution if you are looking for a little bit of fun (this can be done alone, with family, or any quarantine friends you’ve got!).
1. Tie Dye Everything
Now I know what you’re thinking, ‘there’s no way I’m leaving my house just to go get the supplies for this’. This is the part where I tell you it’s so much easier than that! If you haven’t seen it online already, there is a huge trend of dying black or dark clothes with bleach. Some have even used toilet bowl cleaner and the results turned out beautiful.
So, grab that boring black t-shirt out of the back of your dresser that you haven’t worn since high school and give it a try! All you need is a clothing item of your choice, bleach, rubber bands, and a bathtub to do it
in. I’ll spare all of the boring details but essentially you tie up the shirt tightly with rubber bands and then pour on the bleach however you’d like to. The hardest part is waiting hours for the bleach to set in and do its job, but the wait is worth it. It’s a great way to create a unique piece that no one else in the world has!
This cute set print shown above was created by @ylangylangcollection on Instagram! Go check her out for some inspiration or if you want this look without the hassle she actually sells these tye dye sets.
2. Paint Your Jeans
This one was definitely news to me when I first discovered it. Painting on clothes? That seems a bit extra, but it’s NOT it’s actually really beautiful! Now if you don’t have fabric paint on hand and live in the US, Michael’s delivers any crafting supplies straight to your home. However, I believe most people have acrylic paint in their homes and while it is not optimal, I have used it instead of fabric paint before and haven’t had any issues.
Onto the fun part, painting your clothes opens so many doors for creativity, even if you aren’t the best at art it can be a great time. You could paint anything you want on your clothes, plants, animals, rainbows, even sea horses! The thought of having to pick an idea and execute it could also be terrifying to most. So, definitely check out our Pinterest for ideas! We have an entire board dedicated to fun DIY Projects that have lots of cute designs for beginners.
These super cute jeans were custom painted by @artistrybybellaco on Instagram! She also sells her creations online if you want a custom piece of clothing without having to do it yourself.
3. Crop and Adjust
If any of your clothes aren’t fitting right or you wished they were cropped to be a little bit more flattering, now is the time! I would make sure to practice first on a clothing item you don’t care as much about before going and cutting your favorite sweatshirt you own. But, this can be a very fun and quick DIY, cropping something can bring a new life to your clothes and make you want to wear it even more. This also includes turning jeans into shorts for the summer time, it’s getting hot where I live and I am highly considering sacrificing some of my jeans so I have something to wear on hot days.
There are also thousands of videos on Youtube if your clothes aren’t flattering and you really want to change the structure of an item. One of my favorite kinds of videos to watch are Thrift Flips on Youtube so go check those out if you are interested in changing your clothes and are looking for ideas! You could even ask your parents or friends for some of their forgotten pieces of clothing and try to transform it into something you would wear. This DIY is definitely time consuming and requires difficult work, but if you are up to it the challenge could be really fun!
These shorts were also created by @artistrybybellaco on Instagram, we love the summery lemons and DIY crop she did to make them the perfect fit!
4. Embroidering
If you are looking to learn a new hobby or dust up on an old one embroidering is a great idea! Embroidering is essentially sewing fancy designs onto fabric which could also include your own clothes. We will also have different embroidering designs on our Pinterest if you are interested. The designs could be as intricate or as simple as you want, but even just a little addition could change your view on an item of clothing. The idea here is to add your own personal touch to make everything you wear a little extra you.
I personally had never tried sewing in my life
until about a year ago and while it was difficult to learn, it was very rewarding. I added a tiny flower to several different fabrics before I finally perfected that technique and I was so proud when I finally did it correctly. Also, be prepared to be called an old lady by everyone you know for participating in this hobby. So, if you’re ready to get started look around for some sewing needles and thread or order online from Michael’s and get to sewing!
These two examples of embroidery were done by @lojacasulo_ on Instagram! She has great inspirational photos if you are planning on getting into embroidering your clothes.
5. No Sew Patches
If the idea of sewing terrifies you but you still want a cute original addition to your jean jacket or sweatshirt, this is a great option! There are tons of different patches online to choose from and once you have them all you need is an iron and your clothing item. I’ve also seen this done on jeans and they were really cool. But whatever you decide on try to make sure your personality shines through! Again, there are a lot of ways to customize this so there will be examples on our Pinterest. This DIY is a great way to customize your clothes with ease whereas some others require more skill and patience. So, if patience isn’t your strong suit this is definitely the way to go!
